Kerby Rosanes

Kerby Rosanes is a Philippines-based illustrator, born in 1991. His work has been recognised by design blogs, online art communities and international magazines. Most of his art are characterised through the use of patterns, characters, whimsical lines and little elements that are spontaneously combined to create huge compositions portraying his everyday experiences or anything that inspires him. He roughly sketches his outlines in pencil, then working with pens, multi liners and markers, his illustration skills makes his work impressive and in incredible detail. Below is a couple of his pieces which have inspired and encourage me to experiment with fine liners.

One of my favourite projects by Kerby, was the piece which combines some of the most notable characters from popular 'Hayao Miyazaki' films such as Princess Mononoke, My Neighbour Totoro, Spirited Away and Howl's Moving Castle. As you can see, he starts off with sketch outlines, then begins to go over his sketches in fine liner while changing a few details and then starts to add depth to his illustrations, which makes some features stand out more than others. It goes to show how much detail and depth you can go into through the use of fine liners. I think this piece is beautiful, I love the small little details as well as the contrasts with the white and black space.

The tools Kerby used to create this piece.

I experimented with different fineliners to create depth at certain parts of the drawings.
