For creative exchange week, year 1 students visited the "Yorkshire Sculpture Park" Below are a few pictures I took during the day and some research about them. KAWS Brian Donnelly, professionally known as KAWS was born in 1974, is a New York-based artist and designer of limited-edition toys and clothing. His career began as a graffiti artist, then started subverting imagery on billboards, bus shelters and phone booth advertisements. His work exhibits in museums and galleries internationally. His art stands somewhere between fine art and global commerce. This sculpture comes across as a Mickey Mouse/ skull and crossbones inspired character. The head of each figure looks similar to a skull and crossbone- the ears of the characters are the bones and the eyes resembles an 'X'. “Do not worry. You have always written before and you will write now. All you have to do is write one true sentence. Write the truest sentence that you know.”  - ERNEST HEMINGWAY - One True Sentence. The idea behind this quote from Ernest Hemingway, is when he would have trouble writing, he would he remind himself through this quote. He explained this in his memoirs "A moveable feast" which is based around his years as a struggling, young, expatriate journalist and writer in the 1920's in Paris. Hemingway would say the writer's job is to tell the truth, so he would write one true sentence and then go on from there. Surrealism was a 20th-century movement in art and literature which sought to release the creative potential of the unconscious mind. The aim of surrealism was to reveal the unconscious and settle it with rational life. Surrealists were strongly influenced by Sigmund Freud's writings on psychology. Freud transformed the way people think about the mind with his theory of subconscious, which is the part of the psyche that thinks and feels without the person being aware of those thoughts and feelings. Freud suggests that dreams are coded messages from the subconscious, surrealists artists were interested in what could be revealed by their dreams. These artist like to put objects which were not normally associated together, together, to make something playful and disturbing at the same time in order to stimulate the unconscious mind. A Sense Of Place Brief- For this assignment there are 5 themes which I will be exploring and analysing in order to produce ideas over the next few weeks. For each key theme, there are several keywords which will be defined and branched off into other ideas based around that word.   Theme 1: Exploring the city. Theme 2: The city as a species of space. Theme 3: The city as a system of objects. Theme 4: The city as image. Theme 5: The city as language.

This was the first time I used Adobe After Effects, many skills were learnt throughout this task which involved a production of a 10 second video with a choice of colours to flash in sync with the soundtrack. Below are a few steps involved in the process of making this video and what my final piece looks like. In this session, which introduces Adobe CC software, focuses upon the basic layout principles in Adobe InDesign. We explored classic layouts used in the twentieth century by Jan Tschichold, as seen in the Gutenberg Bible and the ‘Van de Graaf Canon’. This task required to design a poster which is a typographic expression of our personal creative manifesto. We needed to use type, shape and colour in a manner which magnifies the meaning within our words. The posted needed to be A2 portrait (with bleed) and output to a press-ready pdf file with crops. In today's session, using InDesign, I learnt how to compose a document and how pages can be structured through the use of columns and bleeds. Bleed around the edges of a document are important, especially when it comes to print as I'll avoid getting a white line around the edges of the images.
