Medium is the Message

In one of our seminars we looked at "The medium is the message" which is a phrase by Marshall McLuhan, meaning that the form of a medium embeds itself in any message it would convey. Thus creating a symbolic relationship by which the medium influence how the message is perceived. This phrase tells us that noticing change within our society indicates the presence of a new message, that is, the effects of a new medium. Using this, we can set out to identify the new medium before it becomes obvious to everyone. If the new medium brings along effects that might be damaging to the society, then there is an opportunity to influence the developments and evolution of the new innovation before the effects take place. McLuhan reminds us "Control over change would seem to consist in moving not with it but ahead of it. Anticipation gives the power to deflect and control force."

Notes made in the seminar

Book Art: Robert The's Book Guns
This is a carved gun from "The medium is the massage" The idea of this was to reinforce McLuhan's theory that technology shapes our understanding by making the book's content unreadable, but offers up a paranoic critique of mediate society.

Guerrilla marketing is an advertisement strategy concept designed for businesses to promote their products or services in an unconventional way with little budget to spend. An example would be using the bench to get your message across. The picture above is a bench advertising one of Denver Water's most important goals which is to encourage their customers to use water wisely. Which is why 2/3 of the bench has been removed, suggesting you only need to sit on one part of the bench not the whole thing.
